We believe country parks belong to all. Everyone should have the right to use country parks and enjoy the benefits they bring. However, for many wheelchair users, making a visit to country parks is a hassle. Certainly, many rural trails are not suitable for wheelchairs, posing a barrier to wheelchair users. However, even if the trail conditions are suitable, the facilities may not be. In terms of transportation, even though the railway and bus systems cover large areas, access to country parks often rely on minibuses and ferries that are not wheelchair-accessible. Visiting unfamiliar places like country parks require detailed planning, but there is not much information about accessible trails out there.
We have been designing accessible hiking trails since 2018. We verify hiking trails and facilities with wheelchair users and record suitable routes on the TrailWatch website. In 2026, supported by Operation Santa Claus, we published an Accessible Trails guidebook, providing all-in-one access to the routes and information gathered over the years. We hope the guidebook can make information more accessible to wheelchair users, easing the burden of planning for a rural hike, as well as increase public awareness about accessible hiking.
